Jessica Couch, Ph.D., DABT

Dr. Couch has nearly 20 years of translational science, project team leadership, and portfolio strategy experience with a proven track record of bringing discoveries from the laboratory to patients. Prior to joining ReCode, Dr. Couch spent 14 years at Genentech, Inc., where she grew in positions of increasing leadership. In her most recent role, she served as a project team leader and was appointed to executive director within the portfolio strategy and management group, where she drove decision-making for drug development strategies of small and large molecules across several therapeutic areas,including neuroscience, immunology, oncology and infectious disease. She led teams in the planning and execution of translational and clinical development strategies, worked with regulatory authorities on the development of novel clinical endpoints, and drove key program decisions for compounds in late-stage research through proof-of-concept Phase 2 clinical studies. Prior to her role in portfolio strategy and management, Dr. Couch was the neuroscience therapeutic area lead in safety assessment where she led nonclinical toxicology strategy for the neuroscience portfolio from early-stage research through Phase 3. She also served as the pharmacology sub-team leader for four biotherapeutic projects in oncology and neuroscience. In this capacity, she led approaches to translational drug development, authored numerous regulatory filings, and directly engaged with health authorities, including the FDA, EMA, and Health Canada to support overall program advancement. Prior to becoming a therapeutic area lead, Dr. Couch was a senior scientist and toxicologist accountable for nonclinical toxicology packages of more than 15 oncology and neuroscience programs. Dr. Couch began her career in biotech as a lead scientist in the department of pharmacology and toxicology at Genzyme Corporation where she also developed nonclinical strategies for monoclonal antibody and enzyme replacement programs. While at Genentech, Inc., Dr. Couch co-founded a working group focused on advancing industry-wide best practices to reduce, refine, and replace animals in research. She also served as an invited member of Genentech’s neuroscience research senior staff and Roche’s global animal welfare committee. Dr. Couch holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Virginia and graduated with her B.S. in psychology from the University of Florida. She earned a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles, and is the co-inventor of three U.S.-issued patents.
